Halfway to Heaven || Half Dome, Yosemite National Park, CA
A moonlit view of Half Dome and the Yosemite Valley from Glacier point in Yosemite National Park. Very view places on Earth showcase the raw power of nature that's on display in the enormous glacier-cut valley of granite in Yosemite. The crystal clear and dark skies offer some amazing views not often seen in California. The small dot of light on Half Dome is one of two climbrs camped out on the sheer face of the dome in a portaledge tent this May night.
Introspection || Stokksnes, Iceland
A dramatic aurora burst above Iceland's Vestrahorn mountain on the Stokksnes peninsula. Views like this really make you stop and think about your (tiny) place in the universe. I was but one speck of light under a canopy of millions of stars and an explosion of electromagnetic energy. Humbling to say the least.

Icelandic Lights || Malariff Light, Iceland
An amazing display of the aurora and the Milky Way all around Malariff Light on Iceland's beautiful Snæfellsnes Peninsula. After spotting some bright bursts of the Northern Lights above our hotel in Stykkishólmur, I raced South across the peninsula to capture this awesome backdrop.

Mountaintop Magic || Roan Highlands, NC
A stunning view of the Milky Way high above our tent from the top of Little Hump Mountain along the Roan Highlands section of the Appalachian Trail on the NC-TN border. At just shy of 6,000 feet, and with no big cities anywhere nearby, the skies were some of the clearest I've ever experienced. Even captured a meteor at the top of the frame.

Moonbow, Meet Aurora || Egilsstadir, Iceland
A super rare full moonbow over Lake Lagarfljot in Egilsstadir, Iceland with the green glow of the aurora bleeding in the top of the frame. Having already endured an hour of shooting an incredibly active aurora in the driving wind and rain, I ventured back out for another amazing round of shooting when I saw the hints of the moonbow forming across the lake. Opportunities to see views like this rarely happen twice.

Aurora over Iceland
The Aurora Borealis streaks vividly across the sky over Kirkjufellfoss on Iceland's stunning Snæfellsnes Peninsula on a crisp September night. The opportunity to see, and photography, the Aurora is an incredible and exhilarating feeling that leaves you in absolute awe at the forces of nature lighting up the sky above your head.
Without question, this night was my top experience as a photographer and is my favorite photograph I've ever taken. From Iceland Photography
Under the Stars
Stargazing on Hawai'i's Mauna Kea. The summit of the mountain contains some of the world's top terrestrial observatories. Due to the island's extremely low level of light pollution and the summit's height above normal cloud cover, Mauna Kea is considered one of the best places in the world for observing the night sky.

Celestial Arch || Shenandoah National Park, VA
I captured this 9-shot panorama of the Milky Way from Shenandoah National Park last night, on a night so clear and dark that the band was hard to miss with the naked eye. This view captures a full 180 degrees with the galactic core (right) rising up from due south and arching over the horizon to just shy of due north. The brightest spot on the horizon is the Washington DC metro, about 75 mi away.
Meteor in a Hay Stack
After a week of rain and clouds during the Perseid meteor shower, I was able to catch this straggler streaking over the western Virginia skies.

The Road Ahead || Delaplane, VA
The Milky Way rises over the horizon on a clear Virginia night as a nearly full moon illuminates a 2014 / 2015 Acura MDX. Check out the stars reflecting off the hood.

Reaching for the Stars || Delaplane, VA
A view of the Milky Way on a crystal clear Saturday morning here in Northern Virginia. An incredibly bright moon slowly gave way to this incredible view of the Galactic core streaking over the countryside in Delaplane this morning around 3:30am. The glow of Washington DC meets the incredible dark skies you can find not that far outside the city.
Aurora Over Kirkjufell
The Northern Lights fill the sky during their peak (I know this because I was up the entire night watching them) over Kirkjufell moutnain in West Iceland.

Fade Into Dawn || Big Meadows, Shenandoah National Park, VA
The Milky Way fades away to the rising sun at Big Meadows in Shenandoah National Park. Capturing the stars can be not only a challenge near DC (due to light pollution) but in the summer months as well, due to the short time between sunset and sunrise. This shoot kept me awake the entire night, shooting from about 1am to just after sunrise around 5:30am.
On Top of the World
The Milky Way rises above the top of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Shenandoah National Park. As one of the few places in the Mid-Atlantic with minimal light pollution, Shenandoah is a sanctuary for astronomers and dark sky lovers. Thousands, if not millions, of stars are visible to the naked eye, and many more shine through the aperture of a good lens.

Blinding Light
With the night sky vanishing at the hands of light pollution, it can be disheartening to think of the beauty and awe that we're missing out on. I found this spot that just amazed me atop the Blue Ridge mountains that shows the dichotomy of the night sky, between what we see, and the vast beauty that lies above.

Perspective
This view puts into perspective just how tiny we really are... and this is just what you can see through the lens of a DSLR. Seeking out a dark night sky and seeing the Milky Way in person is an experience that will fill you with awe and leave you wanting more. Jupiter is the larger white object near the bottom left.
