Read MoreI came across this incredible sea turtle while snorkeling in Maui. I swam along side him for at least 15 minutes while he made his way to the beach, stopped to look around at all the stunned beachgoers, and then took off back out to sea (I kind of think he liked the attention). Such an incredible experience.
The glow of the lava lake in Kilauea's Halemaʻumaʻu Crater reflects off the vapor cloud forming above it. The plume rising up is mostly sulfur dioxide, which would likely kill anyone who got too close to the caldera. This was shot from the Jaggar Museum overlook at 88mm around dusk. Very little editing in post.
Stargazing on Hawai'i's Mauna Kea. The summit of the mountain contains some of the world's top terrestrial observatories. Due to the island's extremely low level of light pollution and the summit's height above normal cloud cover, Mauna Kea is considered one of the best places in the world for observing the night sky.
